Denmark faces data center reckoning as power grid overwhelmed by surging demand

Share

denmark's grid operator energinet paused new data center grid connections in march after an "explosion" in capacity requests. around 60 gw of projects are waiting — far above the country's peak demand of 7 gw. data centers account for 14 gw of that queue.

the pause is temporary, set for three months, but an extension isn't ruled out. the data center industry association is calling for stricter criteria to clean up the queue — prioritizing projects by maturity, investment decisions, and societal value. before the election, energy minister lars aagaard said he'd look into giving danish customers priority, putting data centers at the back.

microsoft is planning $3 billion in danish data center investment through 2027. google's diana hodnett warned that without certainty, companies will pivot to other markets fast. digital realty's pernille hoffmann said if ai workloads can't go in denmark, they'll go elsewhere. ireland and the netherlands both imposed then eased moratoriums, with ireland creating what microsoft called "one of the most comprehensive regulatory frameworks" for managing large energy users.
