a bbc investigation found three chip shops in liverpool and manchester selling catfish as "traditional fish and chips." catfish, also called pangasius or river cobbler, costs about £3.40 per kilogram wholesale. cod and haddock run about £15 per kilogram. dna testing at liverpool john moores university identified the mislabeled fish. professor stefano mariani said three out of ten samples was "quite a lot" and he hadn't seen this level of catfish before. the catfish portions sold for £3.80, £4.20, and £5. cod or haddock portions went for between £4 and £6. the investigation started after a liverpool chip shop owner complained to the bbc. the chartered trading standards institute said mis-selling isn't widespread but acknowledged "unscrupulous businesses." andrew cook, president of the national federation of fish friers, said shops need to list the species on menus. "as an industry, we've got to have the trust of the general public."
