Meta will cut 10% of workforce as company pushes deeper into AI

meta will cut 10% of its workforce — roughly 8,000 employees — starting may 20. the company is also scrapping plans to fill 6,000 open roles, per a thursday memo. ceo mark zuckerberg is pushing deeper into ai, where meta has lagged openai, google and anthropic. this follows several earlier rounds of cuts. in january, meta fired about 10% of employees working on metaverse projects — roughly 1,000 people in reality labs. another round in march hit hundreds across facebook, reality labs, global operations and sales. last month, meta said it would shift from third-party content moderators to ai technologies. meta's global workforce was 78,865 as of dec. 31, down from 86,482 in late 2022. shares fell 2.4% on thursday and are roughly flat for the year.
