meta will use hundreds of thousands of amazon's graviton chips in a deal running at least three years. the social networking company, which serves 3.6 billion daily users, is building 32 data centers — including a new one in oklahoma — but still needs more capacity. amazon didn't disclose the deal's value. meta has been on a spending spree under zuckerberg, signing $48 billion in recent weeks with coreweave and nebius for nvidia gpu access. on thursday, meta announced plans to lay off about 8,000 employees, or 10% of its workforce, to counterbalance infrastructure costs. graviton chips are arm-based general-purpose processors, not specialized ai gpus. aws says they deliver the best performance per price on ec2 while using 60% less energy. meta previously used graviton at small scale; now it becomes one of the top five customers. "graviton is one of the most used platforms for pre training by a lot of foundation model companies, and meta is now one the newest one," said aws vp nafea bshara. meta's infrastructure head santosh janardhan said expanding to graviton lets them run cpu-intensive workloads behind agentic ai at their scale.
