two democratic senators — elizabeth warren and dick durbin — sent a letter to us attorney jeanine pirro on friday, warning she could reopen the criminal probe into fed chair jerome powell at any time. pirro had announced the investigation was "temporarily paused" after the fed's inspector general agreed to look into cost overruns on a renovation project. powell had asked the ig to investigate the same issue last year.
"your announcement leaves the door wide open for you to relaunch the criminal probe against chair powell," the senators wrote. pirro said she'd restart the investigation "should the facts warrant doing so." prosecutors in her office told a judge in march they had no specific evidence of wrongdoing. the judge quashed pirro's subpoenas.
the senators asked pirro if president trump or other officials were informed about the decision to halt the probe. warren also said the senate shouldn't move ahead on kevin warsh, trump's nominee to replace powell. republican senator thom tillis has pledged to block warsh's nomination while the investigation continues.
