byd's executive vice president stella li told the bbc the company can thrive without the us market. "we survive and are successful without the us market today," she said at the beijing auto show. instead, byd is focused on meeting demand in brazil, the uk, and europe, where it says orders are outpacing supply. "our demand is much higher than what we can supply," li said.
byd overtook tesla last year as the world's largest ev seller. the company is betting on new "flash charging" technology that can add hundreds of kilometres of range in minutes. li called it a "game-changer" for overcoming charging speed concerns. chinese ev-makers face tariffs and regulatory scrutiny in the us, but byd is winning brand recognition elsewhere.
byd's domestic sales have fallen for seven straight months, while european sales rose 156% in the first three months of this year. li said price competition in china would make consolidation inevitable. "history suggests not all will survive," she said.
