the make america healthy again (maha) movement faces a major test this week as a supreme court case and a farm bill in congress both put it at odds with donald trump and most republicans. the court hears a case monday on whether federal law blocks state lawsuits claiming bayer's roundup causes cancer. the house is expected to take up a farm bill that includes new protections for the chemical glyphosate.
maha helped deliver trump the white house after rfk jr. dropped out and endorsed him. the group hates glyphosate, the most common herbicide in the u.s. this comes after a february blowup when trump signed an executive order boosting domestic glyphosate production, forcing kennedy to do damage control. with the 2026 midterm less than seven months away and trump's approval down, keeping the coalition intact is critical for republicans' slim majorities.
"it has been a really, really rough few months," said kelly ryerson, a maha advocate known as "the glyphosate girl." the epa doesn't classify glyphosate as a carcinogen, but many people have sued bayer. the administration will argue for bayer at the supreme court. the farm bill includes a provision maha calls a "liability shield" for pesticide makers. rep. chellie pingree, d-maine, said the rift "can't really sugarcoat." ryerson warned maha might just not vote.
